Welcome to Elements Pottery!

My name is Duane Collins. I am a full time clay artisan. I've been full time since the early 80's.

How it all began....

I sat down at the potter's wheel for the first time in 1971 and never would have guessed it was a life changing moment. If covering my hands in mud could be called love at first touch, then I would have to say it was so. Little did I know that this college elective course would eventually become my career.

I studied with other potters in the 70's in Boulder, Co. as a member of Brimstone Potters Inc. (now defunct) and Centrecraft Studios <not to be confused with Centre Craft Pottery in Boulder>. Should any of the great folks from either of those former co-ops read this, please drop me a line. I would love to hear from you!

Where it went from there.....

I relocated back to my home town of Port Huron, Mi, here at the confluence of Lake Huron and the blue waters of the St. Clair River in 1983. I set up a pottery studio determined to make a go of it. Well, nearly 30 years later, I am happy to report the dream is still alive and well.

This is what I do...

Although wheel work has always been my primary focus, it is not limited to that. I also use a slab roller to make hand built pieces. In the last couple of years I have taken to the walls...well besides climbing them sometimes...I mean wall pieces. I like to think of them as a cross between a painting and wall sculpture. They are absolutely my passion!

As well as.....

I started making pendants and beads a year or so ago for my talented wife, who is a jewelry designer <in the process of making her Etsy site>. Lo and behold, I discovered a parallel universe I was completely unaware of. Soooooooo, add that to the repertoire as well.

Why I do what I do...

Mainly because I love it! I am as passionate now as I have ever been and it just seems to keep growing. I keep trying new things out, stretching the envelope. I use glaze, underglazes, overglazes, slips, engobes, and several different clay bodies. I use textural techniques, and multiple forming processes and all for the differing end results achieved. I fire electric, gas, and raku. I feel that I have a wide ranging palette which gives me a diverse range of expression.

What moves me...

Like many artists, I am inspired by a host of influences. To name a few, not in any particular
order: Music-classic and contemporary, Jackson Pollack, Maurice Sendak, children, Classical Art...notably Greek. Well...I think you get the idea. :)

My code and my promise to you...

Thank for visiting and reading...if you got this far. I take great pride in my work and that is expressed in the craftsmanship and attention to detail I put into my work. I hope that my photos are able to convey, in part, my commitment to artisan-ship. Should you decide to purchase my work, first let me thank you. With all the fine work available not only here in Etsy but elsewhere, I am gratified for your support. I take great care in packaging to insure it arrives in perfect condition. I also want to assure you that if for any reason you are not perfectly satisfied I will cheerfully refund your purchase including shipping. I will determine the most economical means of shipping your purchase. International orders are also welcome.

In conclusion...

I love feedback be it positive or constructive. Don't hesitate to drop a line or post a comment. I also love ideas...some of my most successful items were the result of a suggestion.
